She was elected as President of the Overseas Countries and Territories Association (OCTA) Executive Committee earlier this year. Berlin and Train Travel – 18th May 2015

Berlin and Treating Lives as a Theme Park There are travellers, and sometimes I am in this group, that wish that places never change. For example, “get to Cuba before the Americans do”. This turns the local’s lives into a theme park, just there to entertain the visitors. Berlin is one place I wish I visited before the Wall came down, so that I could see the Berlin of the Harry Palmer films. I never made it, and I am a little disappointed that I didn’t get there before the Unification. Which is selfish, I know. Anyway, this week’s show has the Spotlight on today’s Berlin. So listen to Christian from the Berlin Tourist Office as he shares all we need to know about his city. Train Travel I also cover the basics of researching train travel. This mode of transport is the civilised way of getting from A to B. Travel news features a story that proves that the storyline of Carry on Abroad can still happen. 10 top sightseeing tips from the experts at The Berlin Pass Planning a city break to Berlin this summer? Make the most of your trip with some insider tips from the experts at attractions specialist The Berlin Pass The Berlin Pass provides access to more than 60 of the city’s top attractions including the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Berliner Dom, Pergamon Museum...

Secret Vineyards (Hungarian Wine) and Manitoba This week’s show features Hungarian wine and the Canadian province of Manitoba. To be honest I never knew that Hungarian wine existed. There is also the chance to eat some great food too. As guests on this week’s show they tell us more about Hungarian wine and their tour company, Secret Vineyards. Manitoba Fairly easy to get too and rarely visited, the province of Manitoba is famous for its polar bears. Like Africa, Manitoba has a ‘Big 5’ wildlife list. My second guest, Guillaume Post, tells us which animals make this list and what else there is to see and do in this central Canadian province. Serbia and Sonia Gil – Travel Show

Serbia2> My wife has just spent a weekend in Belgrade, Serbia. I wasn’t able to join her on her conference. But the next best thing is to have Russell Stenhouse, who represents the Serbian Tourist Office in London, tell us all we need to know about visiting this country. I should have paid more attention to her trip as we now have a load of Dinaras we can’t exchange. Sonia Gil There are plenty of travel gurus on the internet (it’s not just me!), and one of my favourite is Sonia Gil. Her weekly entertaining video give tips on how to travel and where to go. Sonia explains why she does these videos,    talks about her language training company and Miami Beach. In travel news I saw “each people” instead of “each person”, so listen out for that… All on the John Guinn Travel Show, where every week I’m checking it out before you check in....

Travel Show – YHA (England and Wales)

YHA Back in my day this was known as the Youth Hostels Association. But now it’s YHA (England and Wales). But as a kind of rebrand it’s definitely YHA from now on. I stayed in one a long time ago when I was a scout and as I got older they slipped off my radar. This was a mistake as even someone as old as me can stay in one. The hostels aren’t all in the middle of nowhere, there are some in cities. So if you are on a training course perhaps you should consider staying in a hostel, not just to save money, but to be somewhere which isn’t a bland hotel chain. Youth Hostels My guest is Caroline White, the CEO of the Youth Hostel Association. Caroline talks us through the history of youth hostels in general and about those in England and Wales in particular. Find out what big decision had to be made about the guests’ comfort and why you should consider staying in a hostel instead of using one of the chain hotels dotted throughout the UK. www.yha.orh.uk Travel News Also travel news covers a story that could be quite handy for me in the run up to Christmas as well as other air passengers who suffered with delayed flights. That’s all on the John Guinn Travel Show, where I check it out...
